Lauren Boyle, the Commonwealth Games 400m freestyle gold medallist, again led the way among Kiwi swimmers on the second day of the New South Wales championships in Sydney last night.
Boyle, in heavy training mileage in Queensland, was second behind Australian Jessica Ashwood in the 400m freestyle final in 4:07.13, after her silver medal in the 800m freestyle on the first day.
Five Kiwi swimmers made finals on day two of the international meet that has attracted swimmers from Japan, Europe, Canada and New Zealand as well as Australia’s best.
Matthew Stanley, who is currently training on the Gold Coast, was seventh in the 200m freestyle in 1:49.03 while Sydney-based Mitchell Donaldson was seventh in the 200m individual medley in 2:05.50.
Of the other finalists Laura Quilter (North Shore) was eighth in the 100m backstroke in 1:03.49 and Jeffrey Arona-Tuifana’e was eighth in the 100m breaststroke in 1:03.60.
Other New Zealand swims:
400m freestyle: Emma Robinson 4:14.31 (11th), Samantha Lucie-Smith 4:20.86 (15), Monique King 4:21.99 (16).
100m butterfly: Samantha Lee 1:01.01 (9th).
200m individual medley: Wilrich Coetzee 2:05.27 (11th)
50m freestyle: Laura Quilter 26.28 (14th), Gabrielle Fa’amausili 26.55 (17th).
The final day is today (Sunday).
