The start of something extraordinary

Boyle continues impressive swimming form in Sydney

Lauren Boyle has produced another world class performance on the second day of the Australian swimming championships in Sydney.

Boyle blitzed the field in the 1500m freestyle in 16:06.72, which is the fastest time in the world this year.

She is among a number of New Zealand swimmers competing in the Australian championships as preparation for the New Zealand championships on 14-17 April.

While her time for the non-Olympic distance event for women was well outside her national record, it was faster than all of her European rivals have produced in their various national championships over the last two weeks.

Boyle went through the midway point in 7m59s, and clocked up regular 100m splits of 1:03 or 1:04 in another eye-catching display after an outstanding swim in training in the 400m freestyle yesterday.

She will compete in the 200m freestyle today before heading to New Zealand.

Two other Kiwis were in action with Matthew Stanley 11th fastest in the heats of the 200m freestyle in 1:49.19, which was less than a second outside the qualifying times for the upcoming world championships, while medley specialist Mitchell Donaldson clocked 1:51.15.
