Two medals in day one of Australian Age Champs

New Zealand swimmers Chelsey Edwards and Joshua Gilbert won medals on the opening day of the Australian Age Group Championships in Sydney.

Edwards, 13, from SwimZone Racing in Hutt Valley won a bronze medal in the final of the 12-13 years 200m freestyle in 2:07.54, just a fraction outside the national age group record.

Gilbert, 13, from Stratford also won a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in 2:32.46s.

Seven New Zealand swimmers qualified for finals, with Mya Rasmussen (Kiwi West Aquatics, Palmerston North) fourth in the 14 years 200m individual medley in 2:21.70, only 0.3s outside the national record.

Of the other finalists Sam McKenzie (Tasman) was seventh in the 15 years 1500m freestyle in 16:23.12, Zac Reid (Aquabladz, New Plymouth) was eighth in the same event in 16:25.08, Joshua Taylor-Martin (Enterprise, Gisborne) was eighth in the 16 years 100m freestyle in 52.42s and Elena Forlong (Wanganui) was eighth in the 16 years 200m butterfly.

The championships continue until Saturday.
