McKenzie comes close at Australian Age Champs

Nelson swimmer Sam McKenzie came so close on two occasions to add to his medal count on the third day of the Australian Age Group Championships in Sydney.

The 15 year old from the Tasman club has finished fourth in both the 50m and 400m freestyle finals a day after winning the 100m freestyle gold medal.

McKenzie was timed at 24.16s in the 50m freestyle and 4:05:11 in the 400m freestyle.

Three other swimmers made A finals.

Manawatu’s Mya Rasmussen was fifth in the 14 years 200m butterfly in 2:19:12, while 13 year old Joshua Gilbert (Stratford) was sixth in the 200m backstroke in 2:17:02.

Nelson’s Clara Foster was 10th in the 15 years 100m breaststroke in 1:16:35.

The championships continue until Saturday.
