A group of young physically disabled swimmers got a taste of competing last week when they took part in the 2015 Halberg Junior Disability Games.
Hosted for the first time by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, the Games saw regional teams representing Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Northland, Otago, Southland, Taranaki, Waikato and Wellington descend on St Peter’s School to compete against other young people with similar impairments..
A total of 45 swimmers represented their region competing in 25 events at the Brock Pool Complex from 10th to the 12th of April.
Swimming New Zealand were proud to be involved in the swimming events along with many volunteers who there to time keep, run results and help out in the water.
Former Olympic swimmer Alison Fitch was also on hand to marshal the swimmers while ACC staff who volunteered at the event were amazed and inspired by the young athletes and their ability in the water.
Awards were given for overall top male and top female in each sport with Celyn Edwards (Canterbury) and Kate McKelvie (Hawkes Bay) claiming the top swimming prizes.
